Police activity is a crucial component in reducing the road toll. Publicity informs and encourages compliance, but the reality of enforcement adds further motivation to change driving habits. Enforcement strategies are based on targeting risk, visible deterrence, covert enforcement and consistent ticketing. NZ Police are out on the roads 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and 365 days a year. The chances of being caught for speeding, drinking and driving, failing to give way at intersections or not wearing your safety belt are high and they're getting higher.
Since the start of the road safety advertising and enforcement campaign, NZ Police have significantly increased their annual road safety effort, especially in the enforcement of speed, drink driving, failure to give way at intersections and safety belt use.
Of course NZ Police can't be everywhere all of the time. This is why driver attitudes and behaviour are the ultimate key to safer roads and reducing the road toll. Individual drivers must make personal decisions not to drive at excessive speed, not to drink then drive, to give way at intersections, not to drive when tired and to ensure that all occupants in their car wear safety belts. Doing these things will save lives.
