Speed

Speed is the single biggest factor in fatal road crashes each year. The speed enforcement programme (with its supporting road safety advertising campaign) directly targets speeding drivers to destabilise their confidence and has done so with some success.

Speeds (particularly on the open road) have been falling and there is greater awareness that driving at speed is dangerous.

But last year, there were still more than 100 fatal crashes in which someone was driving too fast for the conditions. Excessive speed is still a factor in one-in-six injury-causing road crashes.

A significant proportion of the driving population still likes to travel at speeds that are too fast for the conditions, on the open road and around town. They pose a risk to themselves and to others who share the roads with them.
