Pedestrian network planning and facilities design guide

Consultation has closed. The final version of the new Pedestrian Planning and Design Guide is now available.

Introduction

The Pedestrian Network and Facilities Design guide (The Guide) aims to promote consistent best practice in the planning and design of walking facilities. We are seeking feedback on a consultation draft of the Guide. Consultations close on 5 December 2004.

The Guide updates and expands the scope of the TRAFINZ guide to Pedestrian Crossing Facilities.

It has been prepared by a consultant traffic engineer and consultant team experienced in the planning and design of pedestrian facilities with guidance from a stakeholder group which included representatives of Road Controlling authorities, users groups such as Living Streets Aotearoa, Disabled persons, Regional councils, the health sector and LTSA.

The Guide covers:

  • The policy and legal context in which pedestrian planning and design takes place
  • The principles of providing for pedestrians – what are their needs?
  • Good processes for planning of pedestrian networks
  • Good design practice for pedestrian facilities.
  • Implementation, monitoring and consultation
  • Pedestrian crossing type selection criteria.

While the development of this document has been guided by a stakeholder committee, we are now seeking wider input from those who are likely to use this document in future. An on-line consultation form will be provided shortly. It asks for general comments on the Guide and also seeks feedback on specific issues raised by the stakeholder group. The guide is comprehensive so comments on those parts of the guide only that affect you or for which you have particular expertise are welcome. You are also welcome to submit comments on different parts of the guide at different times. Email comments are also welcome. For emails please preface each comment with a separate line with the section number to which the comment refers. This will permit collation of the comments on each section.

If you wish to discuss the Guide or the submission process, please contact:
