Whole of vehicle marking (WOVM) involves attaching thousands of microdots containing the vehicle's VIN number to various locations on a vehicle for identification purposes.
Land Transport plans to publish a notice in the NZ Gazette in late January 2008 that will activate a legal requirement for whole of vehicle marking to commence on 1 July 2008, as part of the government's Vehicle Crime Reduction Programme.
The notice will require new and used light passenger vehicles less than 15 years old to have mandatory WOVM applied prior to registration and use on NZ roads. Vehicles already in the fleet at the time mandatory WOVM comes into force will not be affected but may have WOVM applied on a voluntary basis.
Submissions on the draft WOVM notice are invited using the online submission form below.
The deadline for submissions is 21 December 2007.
