International driving permits

What is an international driving permit?

An international driving permit (IDP) is an internationally recognised translation of your current driver licence.

It's not a driver licence in its own right, and you must also carry your driver licence with you when you travel.

Where can I get an IDP?

International driving permits are not issued by Land Transport New Zealand.

If you hold a New Zealand driver licence, you can apply to the New Zealand Automobile Association (AA) for an international driving permit.

How long can I use an IDP for?

All countries, states and provinces impose a limit on the period of time that you may use an overseas licence for before you must get a local driving licence. For more information, contact the driver licensing authorities of the country you're visiting or living in.
