The Land Transport NZ Board has approved construction funding for the State Highway 1 Avalon Drive bypass in Hamilton.
The project involves an internal bypass of a 2km section of SH1 in Hamilton City, from Rotokauri Rd to Norton Rd. The bypass will begin north of the existing intersection of Rotokauri Rd with SH1, diverting to the east of the existing highway and running parallel to the railway line, reconnecting with the existing highway at the intersection with Norton Rd.
The project will include two new roundabouts and the lowering of Norton Rd to pass under a new railway bridge replacing the existing level crossing.
Land Transport NZ Midlands Partnership Manager Rosalie Orr said construction of the bypass would improve safety and reduce congestion by separating local traffic from through traffic.
“The bypass will also create road capacity on Avalon Drive, which will enable Hamilton City Council to install cycle lanes, re-route bus services and upgrade pedestrian facilities. It will provide a long term, sustainable and safe solution for all road users,” Ms Orr said.
The amount of funding approved for the project will remain confidential until construction contracts have been awarded by Transit New Zealand.
