Land Transport New Zealand recently approved funding of $7.5 million to seal the remaining 34 km stretch of unsealed road on River Road between Huikumu Road, near Raetihi in the Ruapehu district, and Matahiwi in the Wanganui district.
River Road, which provides access to the Whanganui River, is an important tourist route in the region.
“The sealing project is essential to improve the safety of the road and to provide the local communities and visitors with access to significant economic, social, cultural and environmental benefits the region has to offer,” said Ian Hunter, Land Transport NZ Central Partnership Manager.
The project is expected to take about six years to complete.
The project is being managed jointly by the Wanganui and Ruapehu district councils. Land Transport NZ has provided enhanced financial assistance for the project to address affordability constraints for the councils.
Land Transport NZ allocates more than $2 billion each year to improve land transport in New Zealand.
