Did you know?

Each year between 1999 and 2002, on average one child was killed and nine were injured on or around buses (at times they'd normally be travelling to or from school).

Bus driver & operators

As the driver of a school bus you must:

  • stop at a level crossing before proceeding across it (unless it has barrier arms or displays an 'exempt' sign)
  • display a school bus sign (and remember to put the school sign away when you've finished the school run)
  • hold the appropriate licence class(es) and a P endorsement.

You should also:

  • report any serious or ongoing incidents of misbehaviour to the school bus controller or your employer
  • keep the doors closed until you have brought the vehicle to a complete standstill
  • not allow children to open or close the doors of your vehicle
  • always check that the doors are properly closed and that nothing is trapped in them, inside or out.

As a school bus operator you should:

  • remind your drivers of the laws relating to school bus transport (e.g. must display a school bus sign)
  • ensure new drivers, or those filling in for other bus drivers, are aware of any hazards on the school bus route (e.g. slippery surface on a certain part of the road in the early morning).
