Each year between 1999 and 2002, on average one child was killed and nine were injured on or around buses (at times they'd normally be travelling to or from school).
The overview group (including key government agencies, industry organisations and two bus operators) has formed to enhance existing initiatives and develop new initiatives to further improve school bus safety.
Regular meetings between key stakeholders increases co-ordination and the effectiveness of national school bus safety related activities.
For example, the group has worked with the Ministry of Education to provide input, support and promotion of a training package offered to school bus controllers. The training was conducted in March 2004.
