What's in this section on walking and cycling?

This section contains resources and information for:

• pedestrians and cyclists
• schools, regional councils and road controlling authorities.

Pedestrians means walkers and any person who is allowed to use a mechanical device to travel on the footpath (eg, users of mobility scooters, skateboards, roller blades, scooters and power chairs).

• The Pedestrian and cyclist road safety framework - outlines a comprehensive approach for effectively reducing the risk to, and improving the safety of, pedestrians and cyclists.
• Pedestrian planning and design guide - This guide sets out ways to improve New Zealand’s walking environment. It outlines a process for deciding on the type of provision that should be made for pedestrians and provides design advice and standards. A set of accompanying resources is also provided.
• Share the road - a publication for use by councils wishing to run campaigns and educational initiatives related to walking and cycling. Information on successful national and international projects are also available.
