22   Higher-speed areas – driving a curve

Aim

  • To legally and safely drive at higher speeds on multi-lane roads, while staying in a safe position on the road and keeping within the posted speed limit.

Situation

  • In a 70–100 km/h zone.
  • On a multi-laned, two-way road.

The driver should

    • Choose the appropriate lane.
    • Keep the vehicle near the middle of the lane.
    • Keep a safe distance from parked vehicles, kerbside hazards and oncoming vehicles.
    • Drive at a speed appropriate for the conditions.
    • Keep a correct position in the traffic flow and stay at a safe following distance behind the vehicle in front (at least two seconds behind).
    • Check mirrors regularly (about every 10 seconds).
    • Consistently search forward and to both sides for potential hazards.
    • Perform the tasks at least two times.
