Traffic sign specifications

Introduction

This web page contains the dimensional, colour and layout requirements for traffic signs in New Zealand. For each sign a table shows the allowed sizes with detailed dimensions. All dimensions are given in millimetres. EPS files for each traffic sign can be downloaded and imported directly into sign manufacturing or publication software. A printable index of all traffic signs is included.

All traffic signs installed on or near a road must be authorised by the relevant road controlling authority. The legal requirements for traffic signs are given in the Land Transport Rule (Traffic Control Devices 2004) and any associated amendments.

This web page is under development. We welcome questions, comments and suggestions from the industry.

Conditions of Use

The traffic sign figures available on this web site should not be used in any visual media (eg, roadside advertising) which is installed on a road or in a place visible from the road unless it is a legitimate traffic sign authorised by the relevant road controlling authority. See Land Transport Rule: Traffic Control Devices 2004.

Land Transport NZ does not encourage the use of non-standard traffic sign formats (ie, those not depicted in these web specifications) in any visual media. The standard shape, colour and legend of traffic signs have been carefully designed to help road users quickly see and understand traffic signs. Repeated use of non-standard traffic sign formats in all forms of media could result in the road users' quick recognition and correct response to traffic signs being diminished.
