New Zealand motor vehicle registration statistics

Land Transport New Zealand produces a wide range of statistics on motor vehicles registered in New Zealand, including information on makes, models, vehicle types, domiciles, weights, cc ratings, motive power and many other categories.

These major categories are published annually in March for the year to 31 December, and are available online free of charge. Some printed booklet versions are still available for previous years at prices up to $49.95 (inc GST).

Please note that we supply summarised statistical information only. We do not provide vehicle lists for marketing purposes or information about individual vehicles.

Note: We cannot search for individual vehicle information using a specific make or model as the search criteria, as this would be a breach of privacy laws. Under Section 19 of the Transport (Vehicle and Driver Registration and Licensing) Act 1986, you must supply the registration plate number or Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) relating to a specific vehicle. To do this, go to any Land Transport NZ approved agent and complete the relevant form. On production of suitable identification and payment of a fee, you will be given a printout with details of the vehicle.
