8  Requirements for pedestrian and cycle level crossings

8.6  Active protection

Active protection for pedestrians, particularly at isolated pedestrian level crossings, may be justified.

The types of protection include:

  • bells plus flashing lights or flashing indicators
  • ‘Second Train Coming’ illuminated signs
  • automatic pedestrian gates.

The level of protection is largely determined by the pedestrian (and cycle) demand and the frequency of train use.
