Walking school bus resource kits

Land Transport New Zealand has developed walking school bus resource kits. A walking school bus resource kit is a one-stop shop of resources for parents/caregivers, teachers, Road Safety Coordinators, travel planners, or others who work in schools such as sport and health promoters, to use to get a walking school bus underway. The kit contains resources such as guidelines, brochures and posters, along with rewards for children such as stickers and certificates, as outlined in detail below.

What does a walking school bus resource kit contain?

A walking school bus resource kit comes in an A4-size labelled cardboard box that contains:

The resources can also all be downloaded from the links above.

The Walking school bus coordinator’s guide (PDF, 636 KB) provides information to help schools and caregivers get the bus up and running, and keep it going. As well as a step-by-step process for starting a walking school bus, there are sample letters and text for the school newsletter, survey forms, consent forms and a route plan. The templates can also be supplied in Microsoft Word format by contacting a travel behaviour change facilitator at your nearest Land Transport New Zealand regional office.

How do I order a walking school bus resource kit?

Anyone wishing to order a walking school bus resource kit (who lives outside the Auckland region), can do so by downloading the order form (order form in Word, 219 KB, or order form in PDF, 21 KB), filling it in and either emailing it as an attachment to order@nzta.govt.nz or faxing it to 06 358 1798. The kits can also be ordered by telephoning our call centre on 0800 699 000.

The Auckland Regional Transport Authority has developed a successful walking school bus programme and kits. If you live in the Auckland region you should contact your local Road Safety Coordinator to get involved in this programme and obtain one of their kits.

Please note there is a maximum order limit of 5 kits.

Can I order additional resources?

The brochures, bus tickets and certificates are able to be ordered as individual items. The bus tickets and certificates are available in bundles of 15 and the brochures in a bundle of 30. These resources can be ordered in the same way as the walking school bus kits and again, there is a maximum order of 5 bundles of each (eg 75 bus tickets, 75 certificates and 150 brochures).
