Although a driver's air bag was fitted, protection from serious head injury was poor for the driver in the full frontal crash test. The passenger did not have an air bag and protection from serious head injury was poor in the full frontal crash test.
There was substantial deformation of the passenger compartment in the offset crash test (conducted at 60km/h) and tools were required to open the driver's door after this test.
A driver's air bag is optional on the Executive variant. Driver and passenger air bags are standard on the Acclaim variant and are available as an option with the Executive variant.
Lap/sash seat belts are fitted to all seats, including the centre rear seat. A lap/sash seat belt is safer than a lap only seat belt. A speed alert alarm is now fitted to all models.
The driver's head was cushioned by the air bag but the impact was severe and protection from serious head injury was poor. The passenger's head hit its knees, which were being forced upwards at the time.
Both seats tilted forward and outwards during the crash. The steering wheel moved upwards and this might have affected air bag performance. The driver's knees hit the dash and steering column. The passenger's knees hit the dash.
The driver's head and chest were cushioned by the air bag and protection from serious injury was good. The passenger's head did not hit anything and protection from serious head injury was good.
The driver's seat tilted forward and, at one stage, the driver appeared to be wedged between the seat and the air bag. The driver then started to roll off the right side of the air bag, which had moved upwards and to the left with the steering column. The driver's knees hit the dash and steering column. The passenger's knees hit the glove box.
The passenger compartment held its shape reasonably well in the full frontal crash.
All doors remained closed during the crash and could be easily opened after the crash. The floor panels at the front were starting to fold and crumple.
The front part of the driver's floor was pushed rearwards a substantial 34cm. The dash was pushed 12cm towards the driver. The roof buckled upwards above the driver's door and the front pillar on the driver's side was torn. The width of the driver's doorway shortened by 15cm and this door had buckled outwards by a substantial amount.
All doors remained closed during the crash. After the crash tools were required to open the driver's door. The other doors could be easily opened after the crash.
