ANCAP crash test results

Mitsubishi Magna | 2001

# Results apply only to vehicles with build dates from August 2001 on.

Overall evaluation:

The Mitsubishi Magna performed marginally in the offset crash test (score 6.40 out of 16). The passenger compartment was substantially deformed. There was a risk of serious chest injury for both the driver and passenger. Protection from lower leg injury was poor for the driver.

The vehicle scored better in the side impact crash (score 11.01 out of 16) but there was a high risk of life threatening chest injury for the driver.

Safety features

The driver's airbag is standard equipment on all variants. Dual front airbags are standard on the Advance variant.

The front seat belt buckles are mounted on the seats and the upper anchorages are adjustable. These features improve the fit of the seat belt. Webbing grabbers are fitted to the front seat belts. The centre rear seat has a 3-point seat belt.

During the crash the hazard lights and other emergency mode features activated. The trip computer has a speed alarm.

Structure: Poor

Offset crash test
The passenger compartment was substantially deformed in the offset crash test. The front part of the driver's floor was pushed rearwards 20cm and was severely deformed. The brake pedal moved rearwards by 21cm. The dash moved 15cm towards the driver. The roof buckled upwards above the driver and the width of the driver's doorway shortened by 13cm. All doors remained closed during the crash. After the crash high manual effort was required to open the driver's door but the rear door required tools.

Side impact crash test
The centre pillar and the side doors were pushed inwards substantially. The driver's seat was pushed sideways but the seat anchorages held.

Restraints: Poor

Offset crash test

The airbag cushioned the head of the driver and contact was stable. Upward steering column movement occurred after the peak of the crash and did not affect airbag performance. The large airbag (designed for the US market) provided extra protection. The steering column shroud is designed to protect the driver's knees from the steering column adjuster mounting bracket. However, the metal arm of the steering column adjuster is a hazard to the driver's left knee. The glove box latch caused a cut to the passenger dummy's leg and an invalid knee displacement reading. The rear seat cushion became dislodged under the child restraints during the crash and could pose of hazard to rear seat occupants.

Side impact crash test (no front passenger)
The back of the driver's head glanced the centre pillar then rebounded.

Head restraint position rating: Poor

Pedestrian rating:

12.43 points out of 36 (34.5%).
Child head impacts 5.87 points; adult head impacts 6.56 points; upper leg impacts and lower leg impacts zero points.
