ANCAP crash test results

Subaru Impreza | 1993 -1997

Overall evaluation: Marginal

Protection from serious head injury was poor for the driver and acceptable for the passenger in the full frontal crash test.

The passenger compartment held its shape reasonably well in the offset crash test and protection from serious leg injury for the driver was good.

Safety features

A driver's air bag is optional. Neither test vehicle had an air bag. A full frontal crash test of an air bag equipped Impreza in Japan resulted in acceptable protection from serious head injury for the driver. Subaru Australia has advised that the Japanese test results might not apply to Australian models because a larger air bag is used in Australia.

The front seat belts have height-adjustable upper anchorages. This feature improves the fit of the seat belt.

Restraints:

Full Frontal Crash Test

The driver's head hit the steering wheel and dash. The passenger's head hit the knees with a moderate impact and protection from serious head injury was acceptable.

The driver's knees hit the dash. The passenger's knees hit the glove box and dash.

Offset Crash Test

The driver's head hit the steering wheel. Protection from serious head injury was acceptable. The steering wheel rotated to the right causing the driver's head to swing to the right during rebound. The driver's head then hit the centre pillar with a moderate impact.

The passenger's head did not hit anything. The driver's knees hit the dash and steering column. The passenger's knees hit the glove box and dash.

Structure: Acceptable

Full Frontal Crash Test

The passenger compartment held its shape well in the full frontal crash test.

All doors remained closed during the crash. After the crash both front doors could be opened with extra manual effort.

Offset Crash Test

The passenger compartment held its shape reasonably well in the offset crash test. The front part of the driver's floor space was pushed rearwards 15cm. The dash was pushed 14cm towards the driver. The roof buckled upwards above the driver and was severely bent near the front pillar. The width of the driver's doorway shortened by 10cm.

All doors remained closed during the crash. After the crash moderate effort was required to open the driver's door. The other doors could be easily opened.
